Panama Viejo was founded in 1519 and is the oldest European settlement on the Pacific Coast of the Americas.

The original city was ravaged in 1621 by an earthquake, in 1644 by a great fire and then in 1671 Henry Morgan and his army of 1400 marched on the city and defeated Panama's army.

Morgan's army ramsacked the city and rumour has it that Morgan used gunpowder as an explosive and set  the city to burn.

Panama Viejo is a must for the history buff.

The old church and convent still remain standing as does the King's bridge and cobblestone roads.

The ruins cover a large area and the history of each ruin is well documented with signage in English and Spanish.

Your Safety and Security are of Paramount Importance to us!
